My trip throughout Europe (Roma, Florence, Paris, London) was very inspiring. Ive taken over 2000 photographs and have only been through half (Roma, Florence). I have returned inspired to work into new series and media including exhibiting my photographs.

Studios on High Gallery Hits 25!

In 1986, four artists opened the doors to the public at 686 N. High St. offering a glimpse of their creative processes along with the opportunity to buy unique handmade pieces. Today, the gallery is comprised of 18 exhibiting artists. Judy Hoberg, one of the original artists and the creator of clay critters, still has her studio located in the gallery.

With artists demonstrating daily, Studios on High Gallery (SOHG) is a unique place in Columbus' Short North. The gallery provides an opportunity for education and interaction with painters, ceramic artists, jewelers and glass blowers.

The gallery is looking forward to a year-long celebration of the artists and community that have given Studios on High Gallery its longevity.

COLUMBUS — Paintings by Columbus artist Ryan Orewiler are now on display in the Port Columbus Gateway to The Arts, an exhibit space located on the ticketing level in the hallway behind MoJoe Lounge.

Port Columbus Gateway to The Arts is a collaboration between the Columbus Regional Airport Authority and the Ohio Art League, which is a non-profit visual arts organization that coordinates the rotating exhibits on a quarterly basis.

“My work is based from a perspective and expression of everyday life,” explained Orewiler. “Along with contemporary art, I am also influenced by the architecture in historical, contemporary cities around the world. Among the artwork on display are three painted aerials of Port Columbus International Airport.

“I’ve always enjoyed the non-traditional, aerial perspective of the runways and terminals from the airports I have visited throughout the world,” said Orewiler. “I also enjoy the feeling from the initial lift off of leaving a city and touching down to visit or revisit a destination. Two of my grandfathers were in the U.S. Air Force and inspired me to learn more about flight in general. I plan to one day get my pilot’s license.”

Since 2000, Orewiler has painted hundreds of cityscapes which have been collected and commissioned by individuals and corporations throughout the United States. His influence is the urban environment of his home in Columbus and the cities that he has traveled to around the world including Jakarta, Chicago, Paris, Florence, Berlin, Bali, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. He received a bachelor of fine arts in illustration from the Columbus College of Art and Design and is a member of Landfillart.org, Roy G Biv, Ohio Art League, German Village Art League (Founder and President), AbX Collective, Oil Painters of America and the Landscape Artists International.

The city has always been my muse. The overall quality within each city has its own source of uniqueness. The energy, the cars, the noise and smell of each city makes them distinct. In these new works I layer images, maps and foreign writing within each painting. Aside from previous cityscape's I have painted, The Urban Reflection series was intended to be more raw."

"I meet Ryan Orewiler, a thoughtful thirtysomething, upstairs at Caterina, a Euro-centric home goods store on the Village’s South 3rd Street, near a spectacular old bookstore as well as the first-ever Max and Erma’s Restaurant, which was a German Village gathering spot before it was built along every off-ramp in this part of the country.

The proprietor of the home design shop, Catherine Adams, a worldly and appealing woman, has loaned her upstairs gallery space to Orewiler, founder and director of the German Village Art League, for its first juried show.

Orewiler was raised in the neighborhood; he shows off the diverse collection of work that includes some of his own pieces, then offers to show me the "small apartment" that he shares with his girlfriend over on one of the nicest streets in the Village.

The apartment turns out to be the entire first floor of a two-story building; it includes a well-tended side garden and a spacious back patio, plus a covered back deck for those rainy evenings when you still want to be outside. For this, he pays $600 a month.

This, just steps from the exclusive and Ohio-boosting Negy Gallery, where customers aren’t so much walk-ins as they are fly-ins, and by fly-ins we’re talking private jets from far away. They come to ogle the fascinating Elijah Pierce folk art collection as well as emerging work from various present-day Ohio artists, of which there are plenty."

Ryan Orewiler founded the German Village Art League in November of 2008. The GV Art League will host a premier exhibition entitled "Unify" opening May 22, 2009. The goal for the newly formed league is to unite artists in and outside of Ohio. The show is being juried by the Executive Director of the Columbus Museum of Art. New Corporate Collection, new member and publications

The Kramer Place at 825 4th Street has 18 oil paintings of Columbus in their permanent collection. Along with the new collection Ryan has been accepted into OPA- Oil Painters of America and LAI- Landscape Artists International. His new works will be displayed at Sharon Weiss Gallery and Studios on High Gallery for Augusts Gallery Hop- Short North- Columbus.

Columbus Alive Interview, Nikki Davis 2006

Forget the punch lines about the few sizable buildings that dot Columbus’ downtown skyline- Ryan Orewiler was never in on the joke. The 30-year old artist has traveled to most of Europe’s old cities, but his upbringing in German Village has been just as inspirational to him as Venice’s legendary canals.

Orewiler, who recently graduated from Columbus College of Art and Design with a major in Illustration and a minor in painting, specializes in cityscape oil paintings that range in size from that of a postcard to a six-foot canvases. Capturing many of the city’s cultural and architectural landmarks, including the Smith Brothers Building and the book Loft, his work has been shown throughout the city.

I met with Ryan recently to learn about his influences and his thoughts on ongoing changes in his city.

Tell me about the inspiration for your work?

I was influenced by old masters like Canaletto and Vermeer: I like the work of local artists like Ron Anderson. I’ve just visited Venice, Florence and Rome, and those cities have influenced some of my work I’m currently creating of German Village.

How would you compare some of the European cities you’ve visited to American cities like Columbus?

What comes immediately to mind are the obvious similarities between German cities and German Village in terms of buildings, streets and even the way he light filters through the trees. Although I think there’s a sort of intrigue with certain international cities, I also think there’s a charm to many smaller American cities in terms of planning and things like storefronts.

You incorporate Columbus’ skyline and landmarks into many of your works. Do you see your art as a sort of documenting the city’s past as well as its rapid growth?

I never really consciously thought about it, but I do enjoy the process of capturing the quirks of the city through photography and also painting. There are certain neighborhoods and buildings in Columbus that just naturally demand to be captured in various methods.

Are you also interested in capturing some of the more gritty elements of the city life, like graffiti or what seems like the never-ending expanse of parking lots?

I’m inspired by everything, even what’s considered to be “bad” parts or neighborhoods of any city I’ve been to, including Columbus. Those aspects definitely contribute to the overall fabric of a city as much as the carefully tended boulevards and other “monumental destination” spots.

I’m not interested in highlighting the more beautiful parts of the city just because it might look more scenic or idyllic. Paris has just as many dark and dirty alleys as few places in the area, not something I’m trying to gloss over.

I think some of the people who might be drawn to my work seem to be drawn to be intrigued by the process of trying to recognize the familiar. It’s almost like a game where someone is actively trying to remember exactly where they may have seen this particular street or corner or park.

Fom an artist’s perspective, how do you think the newer residential properties being built downtown are contributing to the cityscape?

While many of them are definitely more modern in design and I do like what’s been accomplished so far, I think I’d like to see a few more references to older architectural styles. I’m sure there were many considerations besides the aesthetics, but it’s always nice to see a city’s history in the form of its buildings.

This new series is a collective of several Columbus, Ohio paintings at night and during the day.
Orewiler new collection has a variety of sizes ranging from 4"x4"(city blocks framed) to 3ft x 4 ft.
The Columbus paintings depict The Columbus Dispatch and the State House. They also show multiple skylines of the City. Orewiler will be displaying 26 works throughout June and into August. New work will be replaced or added into the collection hroughout the months. ®

A painting a day for 3 months

I started one painting a day April 26th. The subject of this series contains figures, animals, still life, etc. Painting one painting a day of unusual subjects (for me) will give me practice and the confidence I need to pursue as a better artist. Each piece will be posted and also available.
